
Detour - Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout
We aged a thick, chocolatey RIS in bourbon barrels for 9 months. Coconut, vanilla and oak from the barrels adds to the silky chocolate flavours, and spicey finish. Its silky smooth, one to savour.
Ten malts, with rye, biscuit, caramalt, wheat, oats and chocolate malt provide a big, chewy imperial stout base. Challenger and Talus hops provide spice, with a restrained bitterness for balance. The base RIS is incredibly smooth, a solid foundation for the bourbon barrels.
Taking second fill Makers Mark barrels, we left this one in barrel for 9 months. The barrels were stored cool, to allow the flavours to integrate softly over an extended period of time. The result is a menagerie of vanilla, coconut, wood, chocolate, spice and chewy oak. It’s a delicate sipper, that reveals its secrets as it warms.
