We've got the perfect little tin of sunshine to brighten this dismal and damp Brisbane day. Meet Drop Zone; a very sensible beer in a not so sensible sized can which makes for a somewhat sensible knock off. Perfect for shaking off this horrid weather, but can also be consumed in other states that are currently much less shit to live in.

Drop Zone is a crushable, tropical beer for everyday dranking. Notes of mango and guava hit home first, followed by passionfruit, lime and a touch of coconut. The oaty base is soft and appealing with a dry finish. A touch more bitter-ish than previous iterations improves the drinkability and leaves you hankering for another quaff.

Available until it isn't, on tap and in fridges everywhere that serves the good stuff. And possibly some places that don't.

Sacrifice one today to a rain deity of your choosing and restore the order of 35ยฐ QLD winter.

Mark and I have been super excited to get this one into your faceholes, and now the wait is finally over. After much deliberation (at least 3 minutes), we decided to continue our tradition of doing dumb shit and have taken our favourite spreadable hazelnut delight, turned it into a fudge and then transformed THAT into a beer. How you may ask? SCIENCE. Also, luck.

We love inflicting strange and unusual things upon the brewery, so we threw in 20kg of freshly roasted hazelnuts, a veritable boatload of Nutella, a stack of delicious brownies from our pal @amysargeantsonchocolate, and a whoooooole lotta love.

The final result?

Straight up chocolate hazelnut fudge whacks you in the face, supported by layers of caramel, Anzac biscuits and roasty cacao. A full body with creamy mouthfeel begins the journey into flavours of decadent delight. Silky smooth and more complexity as it warms, it's more than just a GABS beer; but hell it can do that too. Oh, and did we mention it's a cheeky 8.5%?

You can gasp now.

Grab yourself a taster/pint/bucket* of number 59 at the container bar this weekend during the Brisbane @gabsfestival. We don't have a stall, but we'll be kicking around during the midday sesh so come throw us some half sincere high fives.

    NEW RELEASE - Drop Zone 5.0% DDH Hazy Pale ๐Ÿช‚ ๐Ÿบ

It's been waaaay too long since we dropped an oh-so-sensible hazy, but we've finally got one landing next week! The next evolution of our hazy pale offering sees us play around yet again with Dip Hopping.

This new technique of infusing hops in warm water, in the fermenter and before adding the wort removes the onion/garlic thingy; allowing the subtle hop flavours to come out. This time El Dorado LUPO and Idaho7 were Dip Hopped, while Talus joined this combo in the Whirlpool with some Galaxy added for the Double Dry Hop.

    Itโ€™s Beer Smells Wednesday! Today we brewed a Itโ€™s Beer Smells Wednesday! 

Today we brewed a redunkulous Juicy DIPA. With Incognito, Cryo and T95 hops we did a long, cool hop stand and a Dip Hop. What have we become?

It did get me all riled up over some incredible flavours though, so I thought weโ€™d delve ever so slightly into the magic of terpenes. In fact, why not a series on the major terpenes we love, starting today with WTF even are these things?

Terpenes are a group of organic molecules found in plants that are highly aromatic. Plants use them to attract pollinators, repel predatory insects, communicate and seed clouds (seriously). Thereโ€™s a whopping 30,000 of them, all giving different flavours. They are highly expressed in cannabis and its plant cousin, hops. 

While hops synthesise a range of terpenes, eight conspicuous individuals evoke pretty much all of the terpene associated goodness in modern beer. These are: myrcene, geraniol, humulene, linalool, beta-pinene, farnesene, caryophyllene, limonene. We will delve into these in the coming weeks. 

While terpenes are full amaze, they also have their idiosyncrasies in beer. Straight up terpene is poorly soluble and highly volatile (thatโ€™s why itโ€™s so aromatic) and readily escapes the boil. Keeping terpenes in the beer is best suited to downstream processes, like late dry hopping. Some terpenes can also be over the top, like myrcene. This is why some techniques like Dip Hopping have made headway, as they remove unwanted terpenes. Other terpenes are also sulphur containing, and can lead to some pretty polarising flavours. 

Whatever way you look at it, teprenes contribute a large chunk of lovely flavour to beer. Understanding their biosynthesis, utilisation and biotransformation helps us make better beer, and that sounds pretty tasty to me.
